Beautiful hardy Garden Orchids - now in

Beautiful hardy Garden Orchids - now in

For many years we have been trying to source a good range of hardy orchids for the garden.  We have managed to get some over the past few years but we now have in stock the type we really wanted - the Lady’s Slipper or Cypripedium!

The reason they have not previously been available is because some of the species can be difficult to grow.  The four new varieties we have in stock are the result of a very long hybridization program which has resulted in more vigorous and hardy plants, which also happen to be incredibly beautiful.

Have a wasp free summer with the friendly Waspinator!

Ideal for those Summer BBQ’s! The Waspinator creates a large wasp free zone without the need for chemicals, without killing wasps and without disturbing the insect world in your garden.

The Waspinator is a fake wasps nest. Wasps are very territorial and if they spot the Waspinator they move off to another area believing it to be an enemy wasps’ nest - leaving the area completely wasp free and you free to enjoy your garden and BBQ in peace!

Made from recyclable material, it is weatherproof, and easily folded up to take out with you wherever you go.

Something to help with the hosepipe ban….

We have a number of ideas to help you and your garden during the hosepipe ban, one of which is Westland ‘Water Saving Gel’.

This specially formulated gel holds 400 times its own weight in water, and slowly releases it throughout the season as the plants need it. This will help to reduce water stress in plants, and help them retain their flowers and fruits in times of hotter weather.

Ideal for all plants grown in baskets & containers, it can also be used for flowerbeds and vegetable plots!

Winter Colour From Stems and Bark

Winter Colour from Stems and Bark

Some of the most eye-catching plants in the plant area at the moment have no leaves or flowers on them - the interest comes from their beautiful bark or stems!

Birches (Betula) with pure white, pink or ruffled shaggy trunks really stand out in the low sun. Snake bark and coral bark maples (Acer) glow bright orange or pink; and the Tibetan Cherry (Prunus serrula) looks great with its polished mahogany brown bark exposed by the lack of leaves.

What a shame it would be if they were evergreen!

A Blaze of Glory

A Blaze of Glory

Throughout these long winter months, a blaze of colour is a welcome relief in any garden.

Planting Cornus alba varieties, (Dogwood), will provide you with glorious coloured stems; from the coral-crimson stems of Cornus alba ‘sibirica’ to the lime green of Cornus stolonifera ‘Flaviramea’.

To get the best colour, Cornus should be cut back at the end of the winter, to about a third. This will encourage new healthy growth in the months ahead.

So for added winter colour, and to brighten up your borders, enjoy everything they have to offer the whole year through.

Keeping it Green

Keeping it Green

Back in 2004 Chessington Garden Centre become the first ever garden centre in the country to gain international recognition for environmental management by meeting the ISO14001 requirements (an Environmental Management certification that shows we monitor energy consumption, and optimise waste reduction, re-use of materials and recycling).

We have proudly maintained this coveted status to date, undergoing inspections and audits every six months.

It was therefore with great pride, that following our latest external environmental audit we were once again judged to comply with the very vigorous requirements of this prestigious environmental accreditation.

Micro-chipped Tortoises - Now In

Micro-chipped Tortoises - Now In

At Chessington Garden Centre we have had the arrival of 2 protected species of tortoise!

We have Spur-thigh and Hermann tortoises, all of which are micro-chipped.

Micro-chipping has great benefits for you (and your tortoise). By already being micro-chipped, the cost of doing this yourself has been removed. Also, in the event of your tortoise having a wander and someone finding them, a vet would easily be able to scan the chip to identify your pet, and then reunite you.

All have registered paperwork.

In a whirl about Christmas!

When it came to ideas for presenting this year’s Christmas themes at Chessington Garden Centre, we’ve got ourselves in a whirl – literally.

During a visit to one of our major garden furniture suppliers 'Alexander Rose', our buyers spotted a fantastic 3m tall Ferris Wheel. Putting their Christmas hats on as it were, and applying a bit of imaginative thinking a plan was born.

With help and assistance from 'Alexander Rose', the fully working ferris wheel was duly relocated to our Christmas department where it will be used not only as a stunning backdrop, but also as a moving presentation of this year’s Christmas themes.

Thank you from Marie Curie

Thank you from Marie Curie

During the year we have been supporting the local branch of the Marie Curie Cancer Research charity. They visited us on 3 weekends with their collection buckets and good cheer, through what can only be described as mixed weather.

Through the generosity of our customers they managed to raise just under £2000 which will go towards providing night time nursing for terminally ill patients in their own homes.

Thank you to everyone!

Local train service arrives at “Lemax” winter village

As development work on this season’s “Lemax” winter village at Chessington Garden Centre continues at a pace, a major milestone has been reached with the arrival and installation of a new local train service.

Last year technical problems meant the grand unveiling was delayed until this year.

Although passenger numbers will be restricted, the sheer pleasure that this exciting new addition will bring, should not be underestimated.

You’ll be able to join those looking to catch a glimpse very soon, so keep an eye out for updates.

Helping Surrey Sands

Helping Surrey Sands

Our Garden Design team are helping the organisation SANDS (Stillbirths and Neonatal Death charity) to create a Babies Memorial Garden at Epsom cemetery. We will be creating a tranquil garden space for families to sit and reflect.

The death of a baby is a devastating experience, and the effects of grief can be overwhelming. SANDS offers support to parents, family and friends left disorientated, isolated and exhausted.

They also work in partnership with health care professionals to improve the quality of care and services offered to bereaved families, as well as promoting research and changes in practice that could help to reduce the loss of babies’ lives.

If you would like to find out more about their work, please click here.

Chessington Garden Centre Bearded Dragon Success

The Pet & Aquatic Centre are proud to present their new additions to the Chessington family – Bearded Dragon family that is!

Last summer we acquired two female Bearded Dragons which settled in nicely to their new home, which they share with a male. It wasn’t long before the females started to look more plump than usual.

Six weeks later, our Bearded Dragons laid and covered their eggs. We carefully removed them (a total of 19) and placed them into an incubation tank.

All are recently hatched, perfect replicas of their parents... and are now looking for new homes!

Weeding our Reed Beds!

Weeding our Reed Beds!

3 years ago Chessington Garden Centre created it’s own Reed Bed system to collect and clean all the excess run-off water from around the site - and today it was time for some weeding!

At this time of the year our reed bed starts to be invaded by Bull-rushes. Bull-rushes do not have the same oxygenating power as the reeds do, which means that the filtration system starts to become less effective.

Our reed bed is designed to work over four treatment stages of cleansing, to mimic the natural process of water filtration that occurs in wetland ecosystems. The run-off water is collected, passed through the reed-roots, and purified by natural biological processes to provide stream quality water!

Just in - The Award Winning Waspinator!

Just in - The Award Winning Waspinator!

The highly effective Waspinator repels wasps and creates a 12m wasp-free zone wherever it is hung!

The Waspinator mimics an enemy wasps’ nest. Wasps are very territorial, so when a foraging wasp sees an enemy nest they will leave the area for fear of being attacked. Wasps have a vision range of over 6m, but at that range they see only shape and colour – not detail. So when they see a Waspinator, they think it’s an enemy nest and leave the area for somewhere safer!

Made from recyclable material, it is weatherproof, and easily folded up to take out with you wherever you go.

Sowing the seeds of Christmas

Sowing the seeds of Christmas

Some people say that the Christmas festive period seems to start earlier every year. Well at Chessington Garden Centre this is certainly the case when it comes to planning for Santa’s grotto.

Having developed into one of Surrey’s main festive destinations, only bigger and better than last year will do! So this week saw the Grotto team visit their animator supplier in Yorkshire to view and select this year’s additions.

Chessington’s in-house designers said “We are certainly inspired after our trip! After last year’s response to Santa’s Winter Wonderland, this year’s early planning stage is essential for us to ensure we deliver the best Grotto yet!”.

H₂0 2Go!

H20 2Go!

As all Houseplant lovers know, correct watering can be one of the hardest things to get right. Over 90% of our customer queries regarding “sick” plants can be diagnosed as either due to under or over-watering.

To ensure that all of our plants are given just the right amount of water, we have just taken delivery of two “H202Go” carts.

As Denise, our Houseplant Manager says: “These carts will enable us to dispense just the right amounts of water to each individual plant quicker and much more efficiently than ever before, ensuring that our stocks are maintained to the high standards we and our customers demand”.

Springtime – Lamb update

Springtime – Lamb update

With springtime fully underway and memories of the winter snow faded, it is now time to take stock (some would say literally) of Chessington Garden Centres very own Lambs.

Having been carefully nurtured during the early weeks, and well sustained during the dark winter months, they have grown in to the fine examples you see today at home half a mile away in their very own field at Byhurst Farm.

Why not keep an eye out for future updates in your all new Chessington Blog.
