What We Do...

Garden design is an investment that will pay you back enormously as your garden grows and matures, enhancing the value of your property, but ulitimately adding unlimited benifits to your lifestyle and home.

From simple planting and border plans, to a complete garden design project we are here to provide inspirational designs. Each design project is bespoke and tailored to suit your individual requirements, so whether you want an instant impact garden, or are keen to watch it grow and bloom, our design team work closely with you to ensure we work with your budget, and that you will be more than happy with the outcome.

We look forward to help creating your dream garden.

Garden Design Process

Consultation
The Consultation is the first stage of the design process, and involves an initial visit to your property that will allow us to discuss your requirements in detail, and present our portfolio of completed projects to you. During these discussions a questionnaire is completed and a design brief can be established.

After the first meeting we will explain the fee structure for your scheme. Although there is an initial charge for the consultation you are under no obligation to carry on with our garden design service after this meeting: and should you wish to progress to the Detailed Design Development you will receive this charge back as a refundable voucher.

Garden Survey
A garden survey is when we take measurements of your garden, so that we can eventually provide you with accurate concept designs, and masterplans.

Usually a garden survey can take place alongside the Consultation visit at no additional cost. If however, a more detailed survey is required, (or on occassions a third party surveyor may be required to undertake a more specialised survey, due to the nature of a site’s conditions), there may be an additional fee.

Concept Design
The Concept Design stage is designed to provide you with a number of inspiring design ideas, that give you several options to choose from, or indeed pick-and-mix from.

A series of drawings are produced for you, illustrating the hard and soft landscaping. These provide a number of design solutions for you, and are presented and discussed with yourselves for your thoughts and comments.

If required, and you are happy with the concept designs, we can progress these towards the Detailed Design Development stage.

Detailed Design Development
Detailed Design Development leads from the Concept Design stage. Details and design ideas from the concept options are developed and refined to produce a Masterplan of your garden. This is a fully labelled, and detailed, scaled working drawing that can be used for the construction of the design.

We will also discuss, in more detail, with you any ideas you may already have for the types of materials and plants that you wish to incorporate within the scheme.

All hard landscaping products and plants chosen are available within the garden centre at a very competitive price. Specialist plants can be sourced by our plant buyers from all over Europe.

Planting Plan
Everybody’s gardens are different in size and shape, but more importantly when it comes to planting, in soil and aspect.

So whether it’s an existing or a new planting bed or border, as you’d expect, we carefully select the best plants for each spot in the garden.

A fully labelled planting plan will be created with quanitites and an estimate of the costs.

Sustainability

Here at Chessington Garden Centre we are aware of the impact we have on the environment, and are always trying to find new ways to reduce this.

Already this year Chessington Garden Centre has been awarded GOLD for ‘The Greatest Garden Centre Green Team for 2011’! (awarded for the 20,000 square feet of sedum roof, geothermal under-floor heating and cooling, voltage reduction and ISO14001 certification (an Environmental Management certification that shows we measure our consumption, and optimise waste reduction, re-use of materials and recycling)).

The Garden Design team are no different! There are many options we consider when selecting green products, materials and suppliers – to ensure we pick the best.

When designing features for a garden, and to ensure the garden design team are as sustainable as possible:
  • we use only FSC certified timber
  • we re-use and recycle existing hard materials, (i.e. paving slabs)
  • we retain or reposition as many of the existing plants as possible
  • we recycle plastic plant pots
  • we use peat free compost as much as possible
  • we use locally sourced materials wherever possible
  • we try to reduce our waste production
  • we use ethical suppliers, (e.g. Stonemarket is a member of the Ethical Trading Initiative)

If you would like to be more ‘green’ fingered in your garden, why not consider some of these design ideas:
  • green roofs
  • permeable paving
  • rainwater harvesting
  • water butts
  • sustainable drainage system or soakaway
  • composter
  • vegetable patch
  • wildflower meadow
  • insect, butterfly, bird and wildlife friendly plants
  • bug and bird friendly homes
  • ponds
