Also known as: Hortensia

The Hydrangea is a genus of more than 70 species of flowering plants native to Asian and American countries

Hydrangeas can be so fun to grow, often amazed by them as children and still so as adults, they are clusters of delicate flowers, ever-changing in colour. They’re not only easy to grow but they are also quite hardy and resistant to most pests and diseases, making them easy to care for as well. There are so many varieties of hydrangeas out there, and you are certain to find one that’s right for you and the area you wish for it to occupy.

Hydrangeas are versatile shrubs that thrive in sandy coastal soils, shady woodland sites, and almost everything in between. Although there are many types of hydrangeas, most can be grown in full sun or partial shade. It is always important to keep in mind that hydrangeas dislike extremely hot conditions, so an area that benefits from the afternoon shade is somewhat ideal. Planting these flowers in soil that is rich and moist but drains easily, is where they will thrive best.

Hydrangea Symbolism

Symbolism behind the hydrangea and its different colours, differs with culture and time period. In Japan, they were thought to be a sign of gratitude because ancient emperors would give them to their maidens as a sign of thanks. On the other hand, Victorians thought that Hydrangeas were a symbol of boastfulness or vanity because they produce so many blooms but drop little seed to share. Each Hydrangea colour is believed to have a meaning behind it and these can be found below:

Pink - love and sincerity

Blue - forgiveness

White - boasting or bragging

Purple - abundance and understanding
