Our team of experts have put together a list of fruits, vegetables and dairy products that your pet may enjoy. Remember, just like humans, some animals will have intolerances and these will only become known after their feed. Start by giving your animal the smallest portions for treats, slowly upping if it seems to sit well in their stomach. All of these foods should be given in moderation alongside their balanced diet.

Small animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits can be fed a variety of greens daily which include but are not limited to:

  • Rocket
  • Kale
  • Watercress
  • Cabbage
  • Little Gem, Cos, Romaine lettuce

As well as other fruit and vegetables that should be fed in moderation. These include:

  • Cucumber
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Peppers
  • Baby Corn
  • Broccoli
  • Apples
  • Grapes
  • Berries

Reptiles such as tortoises and bearded dragons can also be fed the majority of the above. Baby corn specifically dangerous to tortoises and should not be fed, it is too high in protein and sugars which can ferment in the tortoise's gut causing acidosis, a condition that can cause severe intestinal problems and possibly death.

If you own an algae eating fish such as a loach, Plecostomus or Ancistrus and you want to give them a treat, you’d be happy to know that you can feed them a slice of cucumber or potato once or twice a week. Make sure to take it out if not eaten after 24 hours!

Dogs and cats can be fed a numerous different type of cheeses too.

Cats get all their healthy nutrients to live a balanced life through a meaty diet, this means that cheese doesn’t necessarily need to be given to them to snack on and as some have dairy intolerances some cat owners would suggest it’s best not to. However, this shouldn’t put you off trying your cat on cheese, it just means you should monitor how much you give them, as some cats love it!

Cheeses your cats may love:

  • Feta
  • Parmesan
  • Goats cheese
  • Mozzarella
  • Cheddar
  • Old Amsterdam

Dogs can be given an occasional cheesy treat in moderation, alongside a healthy diet. Dogs tend to absolutely love cheese and like us humans would find it rather moreish. Do not let your dog have more than a few small bites each day, some dogs have lactose intolerant stomachs, leaving them unwell. Larger dogs are able to eat a little more than smaller dogs.

Cheeses your dog may love:

  • Cheddar
  • Cottage cheese
  • Mozzarella
  • Gruyere
  • Red Leister
  • Old Amsterdam
